For Art 3, we spend the first few weeks altering paper and fabric through experiments and explorations with Art 2. And then we deconstruct and alter an existing book adding our own pages and leaving some of the original book pages. The students are taught a variety of Japanese book binding techniques and apply one of them to their sketchbooks. They are not required a certain amount of pages, generally at the semester the books need rebound any way and we add more pages for the upcoming semester if necessary.
Every other week the students pick three numbers, those numbers correlate to a word list I have, and they have to incorporate the three words into a visual depiction somehow. These are required to be a 2 page spread in their books. Every quarter they are allowed 1 opt out, where instead of using the words chosen they can pick a prompt out of the prompt binder to do instead.
