For Art 2, we spend the first few weeks altering paper and fabric through experiments and explorations and we create a small sketchbook using a simple binding technique. The size of papers and fabric swatches we use dictate the size of the sketchbook, I recommend 9inx12in roughly. We fold these in half to create 9inx6in books. I require them to have 20 pages folded in half gives them 40 pages in their books. Ideally you want enough to last all year.
They are also required to purchase a 9x12 sketchbook from the store. So they will have two sketchbooks for this course, and we alternate them each week. I collect sketchbooks on Monday and give the following week's assignment on Monday as well. Having 2 sketchbooks allows for better logistics and we designate certain assignments for certain books.
Examples
Handmade sketchbook | Obscure Word collection Every other week we are working in our handmade sketchbook, we choose a word from the word wall of obscure words and look up the definition and depict a visual representation of that word in our sketchbooks. Students are encouraged to get creative and use a variety of mediums (and pencil is hard to see on the altered fabric and paper!!) The drawings are expected to be finished (depth and value) and fill the space.
Student Examples
Store bought sketchbook | Writing and Drawing Prompts On the opposite weeks of our word books, the students are given a drawing prompt with a writing component. Generally it is an artist to research and the drawing supplements that artist's style. The artists are related to what the students are working on in class. If it is not an artist inquiry, a creative prompt is given.
